PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

BBC World Service is strengthening its editorial team in Abuja while future-proofing its journalism to respond to evolving media consumption habits across sub-Saharan Africa.

BBC Hausa is one of the most trusted international news providers for audiences across West Africa, as well as a highly engaged global diaspora. With a strong editorial heritage, the service is entering an exciting new phase, transforming into a digital-first, video-led operation designed to reach a new generation of Hausa audiences who primarily consume news via social media on smartphones.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM
We are seeking highly accomplished presenters to front a range of visualised podcast programmes primarily for YouTube as well as video content for a range of digital platforms. The presenter plays a central role in maintaining the service’s reputation for high-quality journalism and compelling storytelling, while serving as a prominent voice in African media.

This role is not limited to reading scripts or ad-libbing content. It requires active involvement across the entire content lifecycle, combining presentation with digital video production. The role includes pitching original story ideas, shaping editorial direction, and leading or supporting production processes from concept through to final delivery.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Present high quality visualised podcasts and live programmes, delivering news, interviews and features with authority, clarity and engaging storytelling.
  • Research, develop and conduct exclusive interviews with politicians, experts and influential voices across Africa, providing insightful analysis and making complex issues accessible to audiences.
  • Play an active role in content production from concept to delivery, working closely with editorial teams to shape programme output and ensure relevance, accuracy and audience appeal.
  • Drive audience engagement through live interaction, social media activity and community building, creating meaningful connections across digital platforms.
  • Contribute to the growth and promotion of content across YouTube, social media and emerging platforms, identifying trends and opportunities to expand and retain audiences.
  • Embrace innovation by using AI tools, new technologies and creative formats to enhance storytelling, production efficiency and audience participation.
  • Build strong relationships across the BBC and externally, representing BBC Hausa at events, maintaining diverse contacts and championing collaboration, inclusion and audience-focused output.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Recognised and trusted journalist with a strong profile in Africa and a proven reputation for credibility, integrity and high editorial standards.
  • Fluent in English and Hausa, with excellent presentation, communication and writing skills, and the ability to explain complex issues clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Proven track record of securing and conducting high profile, agenda-setting interviews with political, business, entertainment and sporting figures across West Africa.
  • Significant experience in broadcast journalism, including live presentation, visualised podcasts and digital video content, with the ability to attract and engage large online audiences.
  • Strong interviewing, research and analytical skills, with the ability to uncover insights, interpret complex information and translate it into compelling content.
  • Deep understanding of the political, cultural and social landscape of West Africa, with sensitivity to diverse perspectives and audiences.
  • Sound editorial judgement with experience managing legal, compliance and editorial policy considerations in a fast-paced newsroom environment.

If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
