PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

BBC World Service is evolving its editorial team in Abuja while future-proofing its journalism to meet changing media consumption habits across sub-Saharan Africa.

BBC Hausa is one of the most trusted international news providers for audiences across West Africa and a highly engaged global diaspora. With a strong editorial heritage, the service is entering an exciting new phase: transforming into a digital-first, video-led operation designed to reach a new generation of Hausa audiences who primarily consume news via smartphones, YouTube, and social media.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

This video producer/journalist role is central to that transformation. The successful candidate will help build BBC Hausa’s video and visual storytelling capability, contributing to filming, editing, scripting, presenting, and end-to-end content production.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Proven experience creating and delivering high impact digital journalism, with a strong understanding of audience engagement, growth and content performance across multiple platforms.
  • Excellent news judgement, with the ability to identify compelling angles, simplify complex stories and shape content for digital and mobile first audiences.
  • Strong multimedia production skills, including scripting, producing and editing video, audio and social content from concept through to publication.
  • Deep understanding of Hausa speaking audiences, with the ability to create culturally relevant and engaging content for audiences across the region and diaspora.
  • Experience using audience insights, analytics and emerging technologies, including AI supported workflows, to optimise content while maintaining strong editorial standards.
  • Outstanding writing, editing and communication skills in Hausa and English, with meticulous attention to accuracy, impartiality and editorial integrity.
  • A collaborative and adaptable team player who thrives in fast paced news environments, manages competing priorities effectively and builds positive working relationships across teams and stakeholders.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Proven experience creating high performing content across social platforms including YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, X and TikTok, with a strong understanding of audience engagement and growth strategies.
  • Strong video production and editing skills, with experience creating compelling short, mid and long form content using tools such as Final Cut Pro and QEdit.
  • Ability to use audience analytics and performance data to optimise content, refine editorial approaches and maximise reach and impact.
  • Excellent storytelling, scripting and presentation skills, with the ability to create engaging digital video and visualised audio content for younger audiences.
  • Deep understanding of youth audiences and digital consumption habits, adapting formats, tone and storytelling techniques to maximise relevance and engagement.
  • Experience using AI tools and emerging technologies to enhance research, content creation, editing and production workflows while maintaining high editorial standards.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across diverse teams while combining sound editorial judgement with excellent digital production expertise.

If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
