Deputy Online Editor – Mirror (London)

We are looking for an experienced Deputy Online Editor to join us at the Mirror. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in shaping and setting the news agenda read by millions around the world every day.
We are looking for a dynamic, versatile journalist and editor who will support the Online Editor in overseeing all content across the website. From content curation and team management to helping drive our digital strategy, you will play an integral part in the Mirror’s continued digital success.
We’re looking for fresh ideas and new perspectives from people from a wide range of backgrounds, and we want you to tell us the stories you believe are important from our many communities so we can continue to diversify our content.
This role operates on a rota basis, primarily working late shifts (3pm-11pm) and some day shifts/weekends as needed, so a flexible approach is required.
This role is hub based, linked to our London Hub in Canary Wharf. We are therefore open to candidates based in and around London.
Job Description
What will the role involve?
You will oversee the curation and amplification of high-quality digital content across the Daily Mirror’s online platforms. You will ensure all content is engaging, accurate, and aligned with our editorial standards and audience expectations. You will collaborate with section editors and other departments including social, video, and affiliates to develop and execute content strategies that drive traffic and engagement.
You will manage and mentor a team of online journalists, providing guidance and feedback to maintain high editorial standards and encourage professional development. You will set content priorities, assign tasks and ensure breaking news is monitored and covered comprehensively.
You will assist in the development and implementation of the online editorial strategy, focusing on growth, innovation, and audience engagement. You will analyse web traffic and user engagement metrics to inform content planning and improve performance, always staying updated on digital trends and new tools to enhance our content delivery.
Qualifications
Who are we looking for?
You are an experienced senior journalist and editor with an NCTJ or equivalent journalism qualification and in depth knowledge of media law. You have a proven track record of working in an Assistant or Deputy level role in a national newsroom environment and understand what works for a digital audience. You think on your feet and act quickly, keeping up with the pace of a busy, national newsroom with ease.
You have first rate editing, writing and subbing skills and you relish the test of working under pressure to tight deadlines. You have a clear passion for breaking exclusive news stories and know how to encourage your team to do the same. You’re social media savvy with current SEO knowledge and a bursting book of industry contacts. You have an excellent eye for detail and can provide reporters in your team with guidance and encouragement.
