The Role / Position Overview
The Banker is looking for a deputy editor to help drive our editorial coverage. This is a great role for any experienced editor and writer keen to make their mark in an expanding newsroom, bringing enthusiasm and flair to the team.
Founded in 1926, The Banker is a flagship publication of the Financial Times Group with a reputation for insightful and authoritative reporting. Our mission is to be an indispensable source of news, analysis and data for senior banking professionals globally.
Over the decades, The Banker has gained access to the world’s most influential decision-makers in banking and policymaking through monthly high-profile interviews and long reads. The publication is now also focused on daily reporting, and is developing new formats and data projects to support its global audience in making better decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Help drive The Banker’s news agenda, and coach and encourage reporters to get scoops and deepen their sources.
- Support the editor in chief in making strategic decisions about the publication’s editorial direction, new formats and potential new products expanding The Banker’s existing suite (which also includes The Banker Database).
- Write news, news analysis and long-form pieces, as required, in addition to commissioning and editing others’ work and contributing to The Banker’s multimedia output including videos and podcasts.
- Commission opinion pieces from the industry and academia that contribute to the understanding of key financial and economic issues.
- Occasionally travel to attend and report from industry events.
- Oversee the production of The Banker’s monthly magazine as required.
- Moderate panel discussions organised by The Banker and FT Live (the Financial Times’ conference division) as required.
- Be part of The Banker’s internal judging committee reviewing submissions for a number of the publication’s awards.
Required Skills / Experience
The ideal candidate will be:
- An experienced writer and editor, particularly if they have honed their skills in fast-paced newsrooms.
- Creative and keen to make their mark in an established but drastically changing publication.
- A journalist covering technology and, in particular, financial technology and payments, or keen to get their teeth into the tech beat and develop an unbeatable contact book.
- Someone who relishes developing well-researched, insightful stories and fresh perspectives on key industry issues.
- And enjoys cultivating a network of freelance correspondents.
