Data Journalist, The Insurer (Reuters)

The Insurer – now part of Reuters News – is a market-leading specialty (re)insurance news, analysis and data service. We’re looking for a London-based Data Journalist to join The Insurer’s news desk and deliver key news to our global audience of professionals

As part of this new position, you’ll work as part of a wider news and research team and will use data to help uncover key trends impacting the (re)insurance market. Your articles will be focused on a variety of topics, from companies operating within the (re)insurance marketplace to the factors currently driving the shifting risk landscape, such as climate change and political uncertainty. As a Data Journalist, you’ll create articles and data visualizations that generate insightful market intelligence for our audience of insurance and re-insurance market participants.

About the Role

As a Data Journalist at The Insurer (Reuters), you will:

  • Use data to illuminate and identify industry trends within the insurance and re-insurance industry by using – and telling stories through – quantitative data sets.
  • Identify and mine new sources of data which can inform our readership of industry professionals.
  • Use this data – alongside visualisation tools – to help tell compelling stories.
  • Write news, analysis and features: This role offers the opportunity to develop your writing skills in both short and long-form content across our multiple platforms.

About You

You’re a fit for the role of Data Journalist at The Insurer (Reuters) if your background includes:

  • Demonstrable experience of telling stories and informing an audience through data sets.
  • A proven ability to report on technical and complex issues. Please note, we do not require prior experience of reporting on the insurance industry. An interest in the insurance industry and a desire to learn how it intersects with different industries and impacts global economies is important.
  • The ability to pitch ideas that are enhanced by data-driven news and analysis and a proven appetite to dig beneath the surface on specific industry themes.
  • Experience of the insurance or financial services sectors is preferred but not essential
  • Advanced skills in spreadsheets and SQL
  • Experience in Python, R or a similar high-level language is desirable.
