Crime correspondent – Sky News
Join Sky News as crime and home affairs correspondent, leading coverage of crime, policing and the criminal justice system. You’ll break exclusive stories, lead investigations and deliver authoritative journalism across television, digital, social and audio platforms.
Job description
This is a senior, high-profile correspondent role at the heart of Sky News’ coverage of crime, policing, the criminal justice system and home affairs.
As crime and home affairs correspondent, you will be one of the defining voices on the biggest and most consequential stories affecting the UK. You will have the authority, expertise and contacts to break exclusive stories, lead major investigations and explain complex issues with clarity, insight and impact.
You will take ownership of your beat. This means developing an unrivalled network of sources, spotting stories before they emerge, asking the questions others are not asking and pursuing journalism that holds power to account.
You will be expected to go beyond reporting what has happened. You will front major breaking news, investigations, interviews and live events across television and digital, while developing distinctive journalism that audiences actively seek out.
Alongside your journalism, you will build a recognisable and trusted personal brand around your expertise. You will develop an engaged community of audiences who value your reporting and analysis, helping Sky News deepen its relationship with existing audiences and reach new ones.
This is a role for a correspondent who wants to set the agenda rather than simply follow it.
What you’ll do
- Take ownership of the crime and home affairs agenda, including responsibility for relationships with institutions such as the Ministry of Justice, Home Office, major police forces and unions.
- Break exclusive and revelatory stories.
- Front major video-first stories in innovative ways, reaching audiences across all platforms.
- Create ambitious, original journalism that goes beyond the daily news cycle, collaborating with newsroom, hub, investigations, data and audience teams to turn ideas into high-impact journalism.
- Build a distinctive personal brand.
- Deliver across every platform, presenting confidently across live television, digital video, social media, audio and emerging platforms.
Essential criteria
- Clear, authoritative storytelling skills, with the ability to explain complex stories and strong on-screen and digital storytelling capabilities.
- A digital-first, audience-led approach, with a deep understanding of digital formats, emerging storytelling techniques and audience behaviour.
- Proven source-building and relationship skills, with the ability to build trust with audiences, cultivate sources and maintain strong networks.
- Strong news instincts and experience of delivering in high-pressure environments, with the ability to react quickly, identify angles and deliver under pressure while upholding Sky News’ editorial standards.
