PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: CAD75,000 -CAD 92,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

This is a local hire position and eligible candidates must be able to live and work in Canada (Canadian citizenship, Permanent Resident, or work authorisation).

PURPOSE OF ROLE

As BBC News expands its presence in North America, we’re seeking a dynamic reporter to deliver fast, accurate and engaging breaking news coverage for BBC.com/news and our app. You will be part of a team reporting and writing daily news stories and live blogs on the biggest stories in the US and Canada, from politics and high-profile criminal trials to mega-storms and the Met Gala. We want a self-starter who loves the thrill of breaking news and has a thoughtful and creative approach to finding fresh angles on the biggest stories.

This is a unique opportunity to shape how audiences experience breaking news, while upholding the BBC’s editorial excellence and global reputation. Based in Toronto, you’ll play a key role in connecting millions of Canadian, US and global readers to trusted, impartial journalism. You will work under supervising editors based in Washington DC and New York and liaise closely on Canada coverage with a senior editor based in Toronto. You will also collaborate with Digital colleagues in London, Sydney and Singapore on the biggest global stories as part of our 24/7 coverage.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Write standalone news stories, demonstrating versatility and strong editorial judgement across a range of topics relevant to North American and global audiences.
  • Deliver fast, engaging live news coverage, with a strong focus on accuracy, clarity, and creativity in tone, pace, and format.
  • Work a flexible schedule, including early and late shifts as well as some weekends, as part of a seven-day digital operation based in Toronto.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across time zones, contributing to a dynamic, high-performing newsroom that values initiative, teamwork, and editorial excellence.
  • Champion diversity and inclusion, helping to foster a supportive and representative newsroom culture in line with the BBC’s core values.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Proven journalistic instincts with the ability to respond swiftly to breaking news, producing fast, accurate copy using a variety of sources, including BBC reporting.
  • Creative flair for live coverage, with an understanding of its unique demands and a passion for developing innovative, mobile-first storytelling formats.
  • Strong editorial judgement and a track record of covering major national and international stories, generating fresh angles and daily coverage ideas.
  • Clear, accessible writing style tailored for North American and global audiences, with a commitment to the BBC’s values of accuracy and impartiality.
  • Collaborative and adaptable, able to thrive under pressure in a fast-paced newsroom, using social media and audience data to enhance reach and engagement
