Assistant Features Editor – Reach (London)
Company Description
The Express is looking for an Assistant Features Editor to help drive its growing online audience.
We are looking for a dynamic all-rounder capable of working to tight deadlines in our busy, integrated newsroom. This is a varied and far reaching role so we are looking for a self starter who is capable of generating their own ideas on a daily basis and working to tight deadlines.
You will also provide support to the Features Editor and Deputy Features Editor with editing copy, planning and staff development.
Above all else, we want imaginative and enthusiastic journalists who are brimming with ideas. Experience on the nationals and/or in a digital news environment would be useful, as would local/regional newspaper or agency experience. This is an exciting opportunity to join a rapidly expanding digital news operation, to drive traffic to its growing online audience and produce top-quality stories for our print title
We’re looking for fresh ideas and new perspectives from people from a wide range of backgrounds, and we want you to tell us the stories you believe are important from our many communities so we can continue to diversify our content.

This role is home and hub based linked to our London Hub, with an expectation to work from the Hub 3 days per week. Therefore, you must be based in or around London to be considered.
Job Description
What will the role involve?
- Cover everything from showbiz to TV features, and news to politics, providing quality, well-written content.
- Understand the brand’s key content and quickly develop a feel for the stories which work best for our readers, in both print and online.
- To drive traffic to its growing online audience and produce top-quality stories for our print title
- Use your contacts to pull in exclusive interviews and news stories.
- Push content via Facebook and Twitter in accordance with the digital social media policy.
- Optimise stories in accordance with the digital SEO strategy.
- Write and edit in accordance with the house style.
- Read competitor publications, in print and online, and form a thorough knowledge of the content which works best for the brand.
- Find the latest trends and make them work for the Express
- Work closely with the paper as part of our integration
- Drive traffic and ensure it keeps increasing
Qualifications
What are we looking for?
- NCTJ qualification or equivalent
- Experience working at a national or major regional title
- Passionate about delivering a wide range of news stories, from hard news to showbiz, knowing what works for a digital audience in an ever-changing environment
- Social media savvy with current SEO knowledge.
- Comfortable working under pressure and to tight deadlines.
- Sound legal knowledge, with first class editing, writing and subbing skills.
- Experience of a CMS and Chartbeat or Google Analytics would be advantageous
