PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Assistant Editor will play a key leadership role in shaping editorial priorities, leading teams across different locations, and growing audiences through innovative, data-led journalism and video storytelling which reaches a high proportion of young and female audiences.

As the biggest international service of BBC News, World Service is a renowned multimedia broadcaster, delivering a wide range of language and regional services and working increasingly with other parts of BBC News to serve global audiences.

BBC Chinese is part of BBC World Service Languages, delivering trusted journalism to Chinese-speaking audiences worldwide across digital, social and video platforms.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
·      Act as deputy to the News Editor, helping to set editorial priorities and maintain the highest editorial standards, ensuring all output is accurate, impartial, engaging and distinctive
·      Lead and manage teams across different locations, fostering strong collaboration, clear communication, an inclusive culture and a shared editorial vision, while coaching, supporting and developing staff to perform at their best
·      Develop and implement a data-led digital and video strategy, using audience insight, analytics, search performance and platform trends to drive measurable growth, particularly among younger and female audiences
·      Commission, edit and deliver high-impact original journalism, including exclusives, investigations, explainers and digital-first content, while providing strong writing, editing and sub-editing support across BBC Chinese output
·      Drive innovation in video, visual storytelling and digital formats, exploiting technical developments to make BBC Chinese journalism more engaging and competitive across social and digital platforms
·      Oversee daily and long-term editorial planning, manage workflows, priorities and resources, and ensure high-quality output is delivered under pressure and to tight deadlines
·      Work collaboratively across BBC News and World Service, chair and attend key editorial meetings, represent BBC Chinese at a wider BBC News level, and champion its journalism to maximise reach and impact

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
·      Fluency in written and spoken Chinese and English, with strong communication, collaboration, negotiation and stakeholder management skills
·      Experience of commissioning, developing and delivering high-impact content for digital audiences
·      Demonstrable experience of managing and motivating teams across multiple locations and in fast-paced news environments
·      Proven track record of developing and implementing successful data-led video strategies that delivered measurable digital growth
·      Strong writing and sub-editing skills, with excellent attention to detail and editorial judgement
·      Deep understanding of audience analytics, search optimisation and platform performance metrics, and the ability to translate insights into editorial decisions
·      Ability to innovate and adapt storytelling techniques for different platforms and audiences, including using data journalism and other formats to aid audience understanding
