PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

We are looking for a dynamic and ambitious Asia Business Correspondent to provide expert and authoritative reporting and analysis at a critical time for the global economy

This is a demanding reporting role with a focus on delivering high-impact journalism across all of BBC News’ digital and linear platforms.   You will be expected to break major stories from the region and bring fresh perspectives on the global economy, with a particular focus on Asia.  You will be well-versed in the rise of China as a global economy and political power as well as the broader competition with the US in trade and technology.

 

WHY JOIN THE TEAM
The Money, Work and Technology team reports on stories of regional and global importance, providing insightful analysis, original stories and explanatory journalism for audiences in the UK and around the world.

The Singapore bureau leads BBC News’ coverage of business, economics and technology across all of Asia-Pacific.  We report for all of the BBC’s platforms – digital, television and radio.  Our reporting is accurate, impartial and clearly explains complex topics to a wide audience.

 

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

The role requires an ability to explain clearly issues of global complexity to general news audiences in the UK and around the world.  Your detailed knowledge of business and economic issues in Asia combined with your expert storytelling skills means you will be able to explain in a relevant and accessible way how these complex subjects affect jobs, businesses and economies in the region, along with their wider impact on the global economy.

You will also be expected to deliver original stories and news-making interviews with key business figures and to provide daily news coverage when necessary.

You will be adaptable to the needs of a live newsroom and expected to work flexibly across other roles, if required, including providing cover on daily news reporting.

 

 

 

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • A proven record of delivering exclusive stories and interviews
  • Outstanding knowledge of business and economic affairs in Asia, including an understanding of the geopolitical, domestic and cultural factors affecting them
  • Excellent editorial judgement and the ability to translate complex issues and concepts into stories accessible to a broad audience
  • Demonstrated success on digital media platforms and fluency in using digital media tools and production skills to source and create content that engages new audiences
  • Broadcast experience, specifically live reporting on air
  • Excellent writing skills and an understanding of the importance of impartiality and journalistic values
  • Creative thinking to generate treatments which surprise and engage the audience
  • High level of interpersonal and communication skills, especially working in a multi-cultural environment
  • Some travel may be required, including on short notice.

 

DESIRABLE:

  • Packaging for television and/or radio would be an advantage
  • A good grasp of some of the languages in those countries we are seeking to report on can be an advantage
