Americas Editor – Thomson Reuters (London)

At the Thomson Reuters Foundation, we are seeking an experienced, multi-skilled and multimedia-savvy editor to lead our coverage of the Americas for our award-winning digital news platform, Context.

Our global team covers climate, inclusive economies, and the impact of technology on societies. From slavery in supply chains, to the impact of climate change on livelihoods, to how AI is shaping elections, we report on some of humanity’s biggest challenges.

This being a major election year, we also plan on looking at the state of democracies across the world through the lens of these three editorial focus areas.

We amplify underreported issues, explain complex processes, explore implications of policies and legislation, and examine the interconnectedness of our areas of coverage, with the Thomson Reuters Trust Principles – integrity, independence and freedom from bias – as the bedrock of our work.

As an editorial leader, you will bring depth and insight to the coverage of our key focus areas and inspire your team of correspondents to deliver compelling, engaging and innovative stories in a variety of formats, including audio, photos and video.

You have strong story judgment, a good grasp of digital platforms and a track record of reporting, commissioning and editing people-centered stories, especially from the Global South.

You think about digital audiences and understand the value of using audience data in your editorial decisions. You also understand how social platforms are used to build communities and audiences.

About the Role:

As our Americas Editor, you will:

  • Manage, support and guide a team of correspondents across the region, from pitching to commissioning, reporting, editing and publishing
  • Deliver news-led as well as enterprise and data-led journalism of the highest standard
  • Champion collaboration across Context’s regional editorial teams and areas of coverage
  • Curate timely and insightful op-eds from influential personalities in the region
  • Collaborate with audience, social and video teams to drive audience-focused and innovative multimedia storytelling
  • Ensure use of SEO and digital best practices in all output
  • Maintain a network of strong, multimedia-capable freelancers and influential op-ed contributors across the region
  • Help produce Context-branded thought-leadership events including panels, webinars, salons, film screenings, etc
  • Represent Context and the Foundation at public events
  • Manage budgets for donor-funded editorial projects
  • Mentor and develop young talent

About You

To be our Americas Editor, you will likely have:

  • Extensive journalism experience, including a track record of writing and editing features, long-reads, investigations and exclusives, and commissioning impactful op-eds

  • A good grasp of minority, gender and LGBTQ+ rights issues in your geographical patch
  • Familiarity with audience analytics and how to use them in editorial decision making
  • An appreciation for and understanding of SEO-led writing
  • Good understanding of social media platforms, audience building and engagement
