Course Type: Higher Education Postgraduate
Centre: St Mary's University Twickenham
Region: Greater London
Duration: 1 year
About the course:
The MA in Sports Journalism at St Mary’s was launched in 2010 and was the first specialist postgraduate sports journalism course to be accredited by the NCTJ. It is taught in collaboration with the award-winning team of journalists at News Associates and Sportsbeat.
St Mary’s offers one of the best routes into the industry (one year full-time or two years part-time). Each year they select up to 20 students who will embark on an intensive digitally focused training programme that combines work placements with preparing students for their NCTJ exams. The course leader says there is a strong focus on interview skills and storytelling, whether that is through live news coverage, podcasting, sports writing or documentary film making.
Their graduates work in every sector of the industry in the UK and abroad. They have received commendations for their commitment to promoting diversity in journalism and the course leader is particularly proud of the number of female graduates they have trained.
In the last three years (2016-2019), a St Mary’s student has won the NCTJ Sports Journalist of the Year Award.
