Masterclass – Investigative journalism

This session is a masterclass on some of the key areas of investigative journalism including sources, interpreting data, Freedom of Information requests and the basics of planning and producing an investigation.

Investigative journalism is hugely important to uncover truths and hold power to account. And while it is an exciting role, it required specific skills from in-depth legal knowledge to data journalism to brilliant interviewing to exceptional writing skills.

This session is a masterclass on some of the key areas of investigative journalism including sources, interpreting data, Freedom of Information requests and the basics of planning and producing an investigation.

The session will be interactive and will include real-life case studies. It will be led by top-class- investigative journalist David Powles.

About the trainer:

David Powles has been a journalist in regional media for more than 23 years, working as a reporter for the Lancashire Evening Post, Burton Mail, Norwich Evening News and Eastern Daily Press.

After moving to Norfolk 16 years ago, roles at the Eastern Daily Press and Norwich Evening News included Digital Editor, Senior Content Editor and Assistant Editor. In 2015 he set up and ran Archant’s award-winning Investigations Unit before handing over to Tom Bristow.

He was editor of the Eastern Daily Press and Norwich Evening News for six years from 2017 to 2022.
