Editing skills series

Lunch and learn - Editing skills are essential and invaluable for journalists throughout their careers.

Editing skills are essential and invaluable for journalists throughout their careers and are the core skills needed to succeed in most roles in the industry as well as other sectors including PR and marketing.

What is a lunch and learn?

A ‘lunch and learn’ course offers bite-size, professional training designed to fit into your busy day. These short virtual sessions are led by expert trainers, providing valuable opportunities to learn new skills and knowledge.

We will be hosting five short sessions across one week to give learners a snapshot of key skills including grammar and punctuation, house style and tone of voice, proofreading, story structure and simplifying copy.

You can purchase all five sessions or select those most relevant to your needs.

Session 1 – Proofreading with Confidence

Develop a practical approach to proofreading, including typographical checks. Ensure clarity by avoiding errors that alter meaning.

Session 2 – Style and Tone

Learn how to identify and apply consistent house style and refine your tone of voice. Examine how style and tone shape your brand.

Session 3 – Simplifying language to target audiences

Understand how to write clearly and effectively by simplifying complex sentences, choosing accessible language and producing concise copy.

Session 4 – Structuring a News Story

Improve structure and flow by organising content effectively. Uncover the building blocks of a compelling news article.

Session 5 – Grammar pitfalls

Identify active rather than passive voice, while avoiding common grammatical errors that undermine your integrity.
