First speakers announced for Data Journalism Seminar

The National Council for the Training of Journalists is delighted to announce the first keynote speakers for the Data Journalism Seminar on 25 May 2012, at Bloomberg in London.

Paul Addison is managing editor, training, at Bloomberg News where he has worked since 1994. Paul was a London-based news trainer for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region at Bloomberg News between 2001 and 2010, before taking over the global training role. Before returning to the U.K, he was in charge of news training for the company's Asia-Pacific region. Paul will speak about financial data journalism, how data is used at Bloomberg and the tools of the trade.

Paul Francis is political editor of The KM Group, where he is responsible for political coverage of the county at local and national level. He is an award-winning journalist and has been named Kent Journalist of The Year three times. He was also named as weekly newspaper reporter of the year in the national Regional Press Awards in 2011. Paul will focus on effectively using information from FOI requests.

Delegates will be welcomed to Bloomberg by London Bureau Chief, Mark Gilbert. Mark has worked at Bloomberg since 1991 and in his current role is responsible for print news. The day will close with a talk about the opportunities for journalism students at Bloomberg from Jo Ferguson, who is an experienced recruiter for news/multimedia at the organisation.

The one-day seminar will cover topics including sourcing data, analysing and visualising data and utilising data from FOI requests. There will also be the opportunity for journalism tutors to discuss the teaching of data journalism skills and share best practice.
