Reporter – My Local News (Apsley, Herts)
An exciting opportunity to join a fast-paced, friendly newsroom reporting on important local issues across Herts, Bucks, London and Essex.
MAIN OBJECTIVES:
- Sourcing news stories and features for the magazines
- Proofing my own work to ensure grammar and spelling is correct
- Proofing other reporters’ magazines
- Conducting interviews for stories both in person and over the phone
- Managing/creating news lists
- Ensuring the magazines have a balance of editorial coverage (news, crime, features)
- Suggesting front cover ideas (headlines and pictures)
- Talking through the news list for my magazines with the sub-editor and keeping her up to date with any changes to the list
- Liaising with the other reporters to keep track of what stories we are working on
- Ensuring stories are not biased and the relevant people have been contacted in order to create a balanced article
- Sourcing images to run alongside my articles
- Maintaining strong relationships with the local dignitaries, e.g. MPs and local councillors, and residents of each community
- Answering the phone and dealing with any requests that I am equipped to answer within my role or passing messages onto other departments/the editor
- Uploading stories and images to the website and ensuring that at least one of my stories is uploaded to the web every day
- Updating Twitter and Facebook accounts daily
- Creating at least one weekly video on a local story, ensuring a variety of topics are covered, e.g. crime, events, interviews
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- NCTJ qualified or appropriate experience
- A passion for writing and publishing
- Approachable
- Able to work to strict deadlines
- Able to work as part of a team
- Good people skills
- Strong command of English grammar, spelling and comprehension
- Excellent telephone manner
- Must be able to multitask and work under pressure
