Crime and court reporter – Essex Echo (Basildon)

Do you have what it takes to be a crime and court reporter covering some of the most exciting stories in Essex?

This rare opportunity has come up on the county’s biggest-selling daily newspaper and high-performing website.

You will feel at home reporting from court, interviewing victims of serious crime or holding the chief inspector to account over policing priorities.

Using your own initiative and news sense, you will bring fresh ideas to the daily Basildon and Southend Echo news conference.

No day is the same. You could find yourself running a live blog from the court, interviewing victims of serious crime or diving into crime statistics to develop your own ideas.

Crime and court coverage are a huge priority for the team. You will often find your stories are the best performing online and regularly feature on the front pages.

You will help set the daily agenda by checking the court lists and being meticulously organised. Shorthand proficiency and an NCTJ-accredited journalism qualification are essential.

A financial bonus will be paid for meeting page view targets with plenty of opportunities for development.

We are keen to hear from senior reporters or experienced trainees who are looking for a step up.

The role will involve early and late shifts, as well as some weekends, on a rota basis that is not too intrusive.

Newsquest offers its employees a range of benefits and perks including various discounts on gym memberships, holidays and cinema tickets, as well as your birthday off as an additional holiday.

If you are interested, please apply by emailing your CV and cover letter outlining why you are the right person for the job.

We will be considering applications and holding interviews on a rolling basis, so do not delay applying if you are interested.
