All professional journalists should have a broad understanding of how government works at a local and national level, how they link together, where news stories come from and how to develop such stories.
This distance learning should be integrated with practical journalism, which will help develop an awareness of current news issues related to public affairs. Studying the programme will enable candidates to sit the NCTJ's essential public affairs exam, demonstrating to editors they have the knowledge to cover public affairs issues.
