Course Type: Higher Education Undergraduate
Centre: University of Sunderland
Region: North East England
Duration: 3 years
About the course:
Sunderland offers a range of bespoke journalism programmes delivered by a dynamic team of journalists, academics and specialist technical staff.
You will learn from industry innovators and experienced journalists who are experimenting with new platforms and shaping the future of news through our Google Digital News Innovation project. The team has vast experience on national websites, print newspapers and magazines, and with major broadcasters.
Visiting professors such as The Mirror’s Kevin Maguire and Good Morning Britain editor Neil Thompson, as well as key contacts including BBC Sports reporter Mark Chapman, will pass on advice and their experience.
We offer real-world experience in our MediaHUB newsroom where you will hone your skills on websites and social platforms covering news, sports, fashion, arts and entertainment, and broadcasting on our award-winning Spark Radio station.
Our MediaHUB is also a base for a BBC Newcastle journalist and you will be supported by working journalists there, offering feedback and tips. Plus, we have a regional TV station based in our dedicated Media Centre.
We offer the only NCTJ-accredited fashion journalism course in the country.
Employability and the latest skills are at the heart of everything we do, and our graduates go on to have successful careers on screen, at newspapers, magazines, online, in social media, and public relations and communications roles.
NCTJ elective modules offered:
- Media law court reporting
- Public affairs for journalists
- Videojournalism for online
- Business of magazines
- Practical magazine journalism
- Production journalism
"I chose to study at the University of Sunderland immediately after visiting the MediaHUB on an open day. I couldn’t wait to combine my love for fashion and writing with the only course in the region that would truly allow me to do that (Fashion Journalism) and the fact it was NCTJ-accredited made it all that more appealing. Fashion Journalism gave me the freedom to be as creative as I could be with my journalistic skills while also providing everything you need to do that in the real world.
"The combination of media law, ethics and shorthand through NCTJ modules was key in helping me bag a full-time job as a reporter with JPIMedia before I even graduated and I continually use my knowledge (especially shorthand) every single day as a writer for Living North magazine. These skills are vital in becoming a successful journalist. The online and creative modules, supported by the NCTJ, also make this one of the best courses in the UK because they are ever-changing to adapt to the changing world of journalism. I'd recommend Fashion Journalism and NCTJ courses to anyone who wants a career in media and journalism and I'll forever be grateful for the support and knowledge I gained from Fashion journalism."
