Course Type: Higher Education Postgraduate
Centre: Ulster University
Region: Northern Ireland
Duration: 1 year
The University of Ulster's one year MA in journalism has been run in conjunction with the main newspapers in Northern Ireland since 1997. It is the only one on the island of Ireland accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists. Students undertake a six-week placement usually with a large media organisation. Graduates generally find work in local, national and international media organisations or in related sectors.
The course, run in Coleraine an hour from Belfast, provides a thorough grounding in the practical skills involved in reporting, editing and design. Students learn in the university's digital newsroom, radio and TV studios. Law and public affairs are also taught. Those applying should normally hold an honours degree in any subject from a recognized further or higher education institution or an equivalent qualification. However, relevant professional experience will be taken into account.
