Sub-editors
The sub-editors’ qualification consists of six exams and a portfolio assessment. You will learn news writing: how to find and tell a story on different publishing platforms;
public affairs: central and local government and how to apply your knowledge and understanding to journalistic situations; media law: court reporting and associated matters and general reporting excluding court reporting; sub-editing: on-screen subbing, copy correction, headline writing and layout and design; and the reporters’ portfolio: a record of training and experience which demonstrates your reporting and subbing skills on a variety of platforms and provides you with an excellent marketing tool when you apply for your first job as a trainee journalist.
Additional, optional qualifications in shorthand and/or sports journalism may be studied for, as well as the above, dependent on availability at your place of study and your individual interests.
Please see the sub-editors’ assessment structure for full details of the exams.
