Awards for the top NCTJ-accredited courses for 2015-16 were presented during an awards dinner held at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport on Thursday, 24 November.
The journalism courses were presented with awards for the highest percentage of students achieving the NCTJ gold standard: A-C grade passes in all exams plus 100 words per minute shorthand.
The multimedia sports journalism course at News Associates Manchester has been named the best performing course after achieving a 100 per cent gold standard pass rate.
It was a double success for News Associates, whose London centre were awarded the best performing independent fast-track course for their multimedia journalism course.
City of Wolverhampton College has continued its now five-year winning streak as best performing further education academic year course. The college has more than doubled the number of students graduating with a gold standard NCTJ Diploma in Journalism. Wolverhampton College students achieved a 30.77 per cent gold standard rate in the 2014-2015 academic year, which has increased to 63.64 per cent in the 2015-2016 academic year.
Cornwall College Camborne won their first course performance award in the further education fast-track category, with 33.33 per cent of their news journalism students meeting the industry standard.
Cardiff University’s MA course had 93.33 per cent of their students achieve the gold standard, while Nottingham Trent’s BA honours in news journalism topped the undergraduate table, with 59.46 per cent of students reaching the gold standard qualification.
Awards host BBC deputy political editor, John Pienaar, congratulated all the course providers, saying: “It’s no mean feat to achieve and maintain accreditation as the NCTJ industry standard evolves in response to a rapidly changing industry.”
Detailed exam results for all NCTJ-accredited courses will be published on the NCTJ website in January.
